Author’s Note: And this is the chapter where suddenly PLOT happened. Thanks, Oline. -_-
Disclaimer: Eira, her family, and all associated characters are mine but they are playing the sandbox created by the comic Hurrocks Fardel, now available on WebToons (it’s catching up to where we were, old pages are being redone so it is a consistent look). Whether any of this ends up canon depends entirely on the artist, but I’ll try to be consistent with what information they have provided. ^_^

Oline swung Eira up on to her back for a ride upstairs, making Eira burst into giggles. She kept the cygnet laughing through cleaning her face and changing into a nightgown. When she was tucked into bed, Oline stayed to rub her back and softly sing the same lullabies that her and Egor’s own mother used to sing to them. They worked like a charm to soothe the little snowflake to sleep.
Sneaking out to the landing, Oline breathed out slowly. “Ma is not going to like this,” she grumbled out loud. Being her mother’s spy here was the worst.

She dug at a weed with the toe of her boot, trying not to think of similarities. “She keeps Mama busy,” she said, figuring that would be neutral enough.
Oline hummed, but she knew how Eira felt, right? “So you don’t want more of your mama’s attention?” she confirmed.
Eira made a face. She had hopes that Iren would like cooking and the still room. Then maybe Mama wouldn’t mind Eira being outside. It was Papa who she was unhappy with. He wanted to be fair, but at times it didn’t feel fair. But she couldn’t tell his sister that.

It was getting past the time where Eira was allowed up anyway—the adults did special things during the summer solstice that she wasn’t supposed to see yet. Oline told the parents that she’d take Eira to bed, which Egor agreed to before Senta could protest.
It was a clear night, making Eira wish she had a swanskin already. She wanted to fly.
Oline swung their hands between them in a mimicry of children games. “Alright, snowflake. How are things going?”
Eira tilted her head back in thought. “There’s two new lambs. Twins.”
“And a baby swan,” Auntie prompted gently.

Eira squealed as she was swept up in the arms of a familiar stranger. “Auntie!” she said in glee, holding tight to the edges of boiled leather armor. She hadn’t thought Egor’s sister would make it in time for the solstice!
“Dance with me, snowflake!” Auntie Oline said with her wicked smile. “Or should I say rose? Your mother’s taste in clothes continues to be ghastly for you.”
Eira threw her arms around her auntie’s neck. “That is why you’re my favorite,” she proclaimed with all seriousness.
“No need to butter me up,” Oline teased. “Now let’s have some fun!”

Author’s Note: And as if to spite me, tonight is pretty late. Sorry folks, still working on building the habit.

“Why can’t I cut it?” Eira complained. “Iren keeps grabbing it!” She gave the six-month-old baby in her crib a dirty look.
Senta ignored her complaining and carefully braided her eldest’s white hair. “Because when you get your swan skin, it will grow back anyway,” she said with practiced patience. “You have to get used to managing it now.”
“Like yours, Mama?” Eira tilted her head back to look up. Senta’s hair was already up in its braided coils, so heavy the pins fought to keep it up.
“Like mine,” Senta said with a smile, giving Eira’s forehead a peck.

Author’s Note: Finally back from sickness and tornadoes, yay! A little early today since I’m still on vacation for a bit. ^_^

Of course, summer couldn’t be perfect. Eira held her arms straight out as Mama used the lantern light to make sure the seams were flat on a new dress. “These clothes are ridiculous,” she muttered. It was true.
“Hush,” Senta said absently. She tugged on the hem to make sure it was hanging straight. “You look beautiful in roses. Very lady-like.”
Eira used Senta’s bent head to make a face at her papa and then pout.
He chuckled and reached over to tug on her braid. “When you have your swanskin, you can pick out your own clothes,” he promised.

It was Eira’s favorite time of year. The days were longer, things were green and warm. She liked the winter holidays, too, but summer was her favorite because she could get out of the house.
This year, Mama tended to sleep late because Iren couldn’t sleep through the night yet, and Eira took full advantage to be gone before Mama could press her into household chores.
She preferred being out with the various cousins, helping with the goats and the sheep and the dogs. Papa indulged her, and taught her about what was safe in the fields and the woods.

Author’s Note: For whatever reason, Eira did not want to tell me much about life before her siblings (I have a sneaky suspicion that after a few decades, she doesn’t remember it. You’ll see why the further along we get in this).

The familiar sound of Mama’s singing was comforting to Eira even though it wasn’t for her. She didn’t hold as tight to Papa’s shirt as he brought her over to see the bundle her mama was swaying. With an encouraging nod from Mama, Eira pulled back the covers to get a peak.
Ick. She wrinkled her nose. She did not get the appeal. But Eira had abandoned the baby dolls Mama gave her for the play sword from Auntie Oline.
“Hello, Iren,” she said softly to be polite. That earned her a smile from Mama, so it was worth it.

Egor picked up Eira to carry her to the nursery. While Senta would tell him she was too big for it, he disagreed. Eira was still a cygnet.
They reached the door, and he could hear Senta humming a lullaby to little Iren. He gave Eira an encouraging smile, using his hip to open the door.
Inside, Senta swayed to the tune she hummed for their newborn, looking as lovely as the spring festival he had seen her at when they were young. The smile she gave him was full of love that had only grown with the new addition.

Author’s Note: Winter storm nonsense part 2 has thrown off my schedule, lol. Oh well, just in time for the monthly flip. That’s right, starting next week, update days are Tuesday and Friday, possibly Saturday depending on what happens with my DnD group any particular Friday, since I sometimes don’t have much time from work ending until start of game.

Only a few days later, and the house was quiet. Eira tip toed around, gathering some of the recent apples pulled out of the cold lake and a hunk of cheese out of the cabinets in the kitchen. She couldn’t reach the cups for her usual milk, but that’s what the pitcher of water and glasses on the table were for. Those were kept where she could reach as soon as she proved she could be careful.
She kicked the air as she helped herself to her breakfast. She’d helped! Mama and Papa could rest with the new baby now.
